About Historic Fort Wayne
The Fort Wayne that generations of Detroiters know today was constructed in 1845 on the banks of the Detroit river, where it stood watch against aggression from the then-British colony of Canada. The fort guarded American soil throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and although its weapons never fired a shot in anger, it became a major staging area for American soldiers during the Civil War and both world wars. Thousands of Americans have passed through its gates in the service of their country. One of the few star forts remaining in existence in the world today (so called due to the shape of the fortress walls when seen from above), the fort today is owned by the city of Detroit and operated by the city of Detroit Parks and Recreation Department in partnership with the dedicated group of preservationists and event specialists known as the Historic Fort Wayne Coalition. Though its days as the city's guardian have passed, the fort today is an important public treasure where people can experience history in a unique setting.
As befits a location with such a lengthy and active history, persons throughout the years have told of encounters with ghostly forms and unexplainable activity on the fort's grounds. Now, guests can explore this hidden jewel in the heart of Detroit and find out if the stories are simply tall tales - or if the old fort is not quite so empty after all...
